Singapore Draw With Vietnam

Until this match the advantage very much looked in favour of Vietnam sneaking through at the expense of Singapore, particularly after their lacklustre win over Laos, but after holding favourites Vietnam to a 0-0 draw it is game on.

Singapore 0 Vietnam 0

Despite the scoreline this was anything but a boring game and indeed showed the class of 160the world ranked Singapore against a team that has been the bookies favourite for the title.

Incident wise the Lions lost star striker Ilhan Fandi after the 20 year old limped off in the 45th minute. He courageously refused the stretcher and walked off head held high, but for all intents his season is very much over.

his defiance marked the rest of the match against a Vietnam team that they have not beaten since 1998, a notable 1-0 victory in the AFF Championship final of that year.

Speaking to the press after the match elder brother and Man of the Match Irfan Fandi stated: “It is sad that we have lost a few players to injury along the way, but we will manage because we have other good players”.

And while everyone wanted a win, coach Takayuki Nishigaya acknowledged it was a “positive point”.

Who will qualify from Group B?

After the Singapore draw with Vietnam it leaves Vietnam top on 7 points, Singapore second on 7 points, with Malaysia 3rd on 6 points. Again another reason to rue only getting two goals against Laos.

Vietnam face Myanmar in their final match, so are all, but mathematically through, but Singapore will need to face Malaysia. They will technically only need a point to get through, but this is do, or die for both sides, with many pundits making Malaysia the better team.
