The AFF U23 championship is well under way and it’s already shaping up to be an interesting tournament.
Group A is where the action is…
The four teams group is where all the drama will take place as every result will be crucial. Thailand, the hosts, have taken maximum points with wins over Myanmar and Brunei respectively. Cambodia are second after a win over Brunei, who are eliminated, and a draw with Myanmar. On Tuesday Cambodia face Thailand and Myanmar take on Brunei.
Group B could go either way …
Malaysia are expected to win the group and open with a win over SEA Games champions Indonesia who are playing with a weakened side. Timor are the underdog of the group but have shown at U23 level they’re more than capable of surprising people. Cristevao is a gem and the heart of the midfield and they’re capable of beating the two giants in this group.
Group C a no brainer…
Vietnam are expected to win the group comfortably with the Philippines and Laos the other two next to them. They’ve already played out a 2-2 draw which is already a clear indication this will be the case.
Cambodia and the battle for second place
The draw against Myanmar may be as costly as could be. Results vs Brunei will not count Group A meaning Cambodia must get a result against Thailand on Tuesday or they’re out of the competition.
If we win… . then we top the group and are through.
If we lose… . we’re going home.
A draw… . Could be enough but then we’re wishing for results elsewhere. In Group C Vietnam win both games then a draw will take us higher than the Philippines. In Group B we would need Malaysia to beat Timor and then Timor and Indonesia draw.
Thailand will likely rest key players but will be in no way ready to do anyone any favors. Timor vs Indonesia is today and anything but a draw and Cambodia will need to do the almighty thing and knock out the hosts on Tuesday.
