Cambodian cricket has not only proved a big “hit” with fans, but has also brought three gold medals to the Kingdom, in a fairly unexpected turn of events.
What is the cricket scene in Cambodia?
Prior to getting the SEA Games relatively non-existent, but a local competition was set-up in 2022, the national gained asocial member status in T20’s governing body the Asian Cricket Council and a formidable team being built.
Said team and indeed the whole scene has been driven mainly by the Indian diaspora, but Khmer players are also coming to the fore, hence the gold medals.
What did Cambodian Cricket win?
In total there were three cricket disciplines namely T20, T10 and 50 overs. If these terms confuse you, don’t worry you are not alone, but to sum up these are quicker versions of “normal” cricket where 5 day matches can end up in a tie. They are therefore by default also much more entertaining.
The Cambodian men’s team ended up winning gold in all three events, beating the formidable Malaysia in each match. The triumph is all the more impressive as this is only the second time cricket has been included in the SEA Games and these are the first medals for the Kingdom.
And the Cambodian Cricket women’s team?
They did not perform quite as well as the men’s team and were pipped to a bronze medal by Singapore, finishing 4th out of the 7 nations that took part in the competition.
Again though this was the first time that the women had even taken part, so it is very much seen as a success.
What next for Cambodian cricket?
No one quite knows, but the obvious hope is that this is far from a flash in the pan and that this success can breed further interest and indeed further sucesss going forward.
And with a domestic competition and three gold medals in the bag, you have to be more than confident for the future of Cambodian cricket.
