Fresh from hosting the 2023 South-East Asian (SEA) Games for the first time, local sports fans are set to be treated to another major event, with Cambodia again being called upon as a host.

Tennis Cambodia has been chosen by both the International Tennis Federation (ITF) as well as the Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) to host the 2023 ITF Asian Under 14’s Championship.

When and where can I watch the 2023 ITF Asian Junior Under 14’s Championship?

The event, one of the most important within the ITF calendar will be hosted at the Morodok Techo National Stadium from September 4th though 8th, and will see some of the world’s top up and coming talent descend on the Kingdom.

The tournament, which is invite only will see 48 players split into boys and girls. Those “invited” include various winners of certain tournaments, those ranked high enough, as well as 8 “wild cards”, with one on each group earmarked for Cambodian players.

Currently three Cambodian junior players will play each other to receive one of the two wildcard spots in each category.

The rise of Tennis Cambodia

The event, whilst not the first ITF tournament to be held in the country is though further testament to not just how much Cambodia has developed, but also tennis  within Cambodia itself.

Tennis Cambodia managed an unprecedented promotion in the Davis Cup last year, as well as recently taking part in a tennis development program in Kuala Lumpur.

You can read about that here.

They have also been successful in raising both sponsorship and the profile of the sport within the Kingdom, with it no longer being seen as one only for the richer classes. Tennis Cambodia this year arranged a kit deal with leading sports apparel brand Desportol, who are also a major sponsor of the event.

The tournament is being directed by 2023 Southeast Asian Games Bronze medalist Chhinda Som, alongside former national player, coach and Davis Cup captain Chea Poeuv.

The IFFAsian Junior Championship is open to both the public, as well as journalists wishing to come to see matches, with organizers also expelling an uptick in visitors traveling to the Kingdom to spectate.
