Cambodia Win First Gold in 3×3 Women’s Wheelchair Basketball

Cambodia have taken the first gold medal at the 2023 Para Games with an 11-9 victory over Thailand in the women’s 3 vs 3 wheelchair basketball event.

The game, which was held at the Morodok Techo Stadium was the first victory for the hosts at the 12th ASEAN Para Games which were officially opened by Prime-Minister Hun Sen on the evening of June 2nd.

How significant is the win?

Cambodia are a relative powerhouse at wheelchair basketball, with heavy support received from both the government, as well as sponsors Prince Foundation.

This meant the victory, whilst hoped for still felt like the culmination of all the hard work that everyone had put into preparation and participation. Speaking exclusively to BPVE President of the Cambodian Wheelchair Federation, Senior Minister & First Vice President, Cambodian Mine Action & Victim Assistance Authority, Ly Touch told us;

“Peace has rewarded Cambodia and her people with this gold medal. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Cambodian women’s wheelchair basketball team for their remarkable achievement in bringing home the first gold medal of the 12th ASEAN Para Games. Their dedication, hard work, and resilience have been duly rewarded, and they have made our nation proud. This victory showcases the strength and determination of our athletes and highlights the progress we have made in promoting inclusivity and accessibility in sports. I commend the players for their exceptional skills and teamwork, and I also express my gratitude to the coaches, officials, and supporters who have contributed to this success. What next fro wheelchair basketball?

For players fans and stakeholders this is hopefully the first of many medals for the team, with there still being three more medals up for grabs at the 12th ASEAN Para Games.

For the women the next medal up for grabs will be in the 5 vs 5 tournament, while the men will also compete in 3 vs 3 and 5 vs 5 competitions.
