The draw for the 2023-24 Cambodian Premier League (1) is set to take place on June 30th according to an announcement on their official Facebook page.
According to the statement the 2023-24 fixture list would be streamed live via the CPL Facebook page at 11.30 am on June 30th.
What will the format be?
The 2022 season involved a controversial format whereby the 8 clubs played each other 3 times before the top 4 clubs entered a North American style playoff round. This meant that some clubs played more “harder” matches away from home, which many felt gage some clubs an unfair advantage.
And as for how many rounds we will see in 2023-24, amazingly no one actually knows, with many club managers speculating that it will be 3 rounds, followed by some form of top 4 playoffs.
This would mean clubs playing at least 27 games, with one club manager telling BPVE “Satoshi needs to make his mind up, either 3 straight rounds, or 3 rounds including playoffs”.
We do know that matches are slated to take place on Saturdays rather than Sunday, with some flexibility for having “featured games” assuming of course the hallowed TV deal is ever achieved.
And the CPL 2?
The proverbial elephant in the room with mixed signals being given on an almost daily basis. The CPL have put a “coming soon” on their Facebook page, but many top-flight and second-tier managers have stated privately that they do not believe it will take place.
Should this befall the league then questions will undoubtedly be asked about the wisdom and benefit of moving from the successful MetFone C-League to the the chaos that is the current CPL
