Former Visakha Coach Colum Curtis Moves to Kaya FC of Philippines

Colum Curtis

Former Viskha coach Colum Curtis, who nearly led the club to their first ever league championship has been made manager of Kaya FC of the Philippines for their Copa Paulino Alcatara and AFC Champions League campaigns.

Colum was previously the most qualified coach in Cambodia having competed his UEFA. He also co-owns a popular phnom penh based football academy.

Said academy recently brought Portuguese giants Benfica to Cambodia for a training camp.

Why the move to Kaya FC?

Speaking exclusively to BPVE, Colum stated it was primarily the chance to manage in the AFC Champions League at such a tender age that led him to take the position.

Curtis has been out of a job since leaving Visakha under somewhat of a cloud late into the 2021 season. At the time the club were seemingly destined for the title only to fall short under controversial circumstances.

He has since been linked to a number of jobs in Cambodia and Thailand as well as within the Cambodian national setup under Felix Dalmas.

Yet according to Colum he wanted to “wait for the right opportunity”, with the chance to manage in the AFC Champions League proving to be just that.

Will he stay at Kaya FC?

That is currently unknown, with clubs regularly hiring A license coaches for continental competition in order to meet AFC, or indeed UEFA criteria.

Should he do well though, opportunities at the champions of the Philippines, back in Cambodia, or indeed further afield are sure to follow.

His move sees Cambodia lose another talented foreign coach after Connor Nestor moved to the high-paying Indian Super League earlier this year.
