CPL’s International Stars Head Off For Duty

A number of international stars from the Cambodian Premier League have headed back to their home nations to take part in upcoming World Cup Qualifiers, as well as Under 23 matches.

One of the key aims of the CPL was to improve the range of players brought into the league, particularly those from within ASEAM, as demonstrated by the current foreign player quotas.

Who has been called up?

A total of three players from Timor-Leste have been called up including national captain Mouzinho, John Frith of ISI, as well as new Angkor City FC signing Cristevão Fernandes, the cousin of the national captain.

In total 10 players have been called up from CPL clubs, which also includes Soe Moe Kyaw, of Myanmar who currently plays for Phnom Penh Crown, as well as Filipino left-back Pocholo Arelleno Bugas of Angkor Tiger.

Bugas was one of the last signings of Alistair Heath, before his controversial dismissal by the club.

A more “international league”

On Sunday, Japanese head coach Gyotoku Koji led the Cambodia Under 23 national team to Saudi Arabia where they will face qualification matches for the AFC Asian Cup, which much like the previous World Cup is set to be hoisted in oil rich Gulf State.

Speaking to reporters he stated that he wanted to not only see more ASEAN players within Cambodia, but also more local players making the leap to play abroad.

Currently the only Cambodian of note playing abroad is Seang Chanthea who recently moved to play in the second-tier of Qatar, on loan for a season from Boeung Ket.
