The reason for the cancelling pot the contracts has not been announced, but it has been speculated that it is related to both finances, as well as the rumors that the club will not be allowed to compete in the top-tier, despite finishing as champions last year.

What are EDC FC being denied promotion?

While not officially announced the general consensus on the runner mill is that the club will be denied promotion due to the new club licensing system employed by the CPL.

The current licensing laws, allegedly state that clubs in the top-tier must be private companies and not state owned, as EDC FC are.

The second issue relates to the EDC FC Stadium, which some have stated is not up to “CPL Standards”. Their ground, which is quite literally located in a power station while limited not only own their own stadium, but also offers better facilities than a number of other clubs.

Boeung Ket FC recently announced that they would be leaving the Cambodian Airways Stadium, bringing up another huge issue within the CPL, that of clubs not owning their stadiums.

What next for EDC FC?

Aside from a number of clubs picking off their now released players not much is known. The announcement though will more than likely seal the fact that they will not be taking part in CPL 1 next year.

The big question though is they will be able to compete at all in the 2023-24 season and indeed where they will find players.
