We’re two days away from the official draw of the of the fixtures (Match Schedule) for this seasons Cambodian Premier League. Here is our guide is what to expect from this event.
CPL Fixture Draw…
In a nutshell the live draw is to organize the match schedule for the upcoming premier league season. The season is set to kick off on the weekend of August 5th/6th although with the U23 National Team playing in Thailand on 17th-23rd don’t be surprised if the opening weekend is delayed until after this.
The Teams Involved…
There are ten teams this season involved in the CPL, two up from last season. Phnom Penh Crown are the defending champions and have already picked up the League Cup this year. They could have two trophies to their name by the time the season kicks off if they can lift the Super Cup. Vishaka, Hun Sen Cup Champions, stand in their way and are expected to be the main challengers this season for the title. They will be joined by Svay Rieng, under new head coach Pep Munoz, Nagaworld, League Cup runners up and Boeung Ket. Tiffy Army are always the dark horse just outside this group of five. ISI and Prey Veng have been controversially promoted from League Two despite finishing 2nd and 5th respectively. They should be replacing Kirivong and Angkor Tiger, both of whom were not relegated.
Format For The Season Ahead…
This is anyone’s guess and, if history tells us anything, subject to change depending on unforeseen circumstances. What we do expect us is teams to play three rounds (27 games) meaning some will play more home than away giving those teams an advantage. The top four will go into play offs & relegation will depend on the status of the League Two clubs and their club license applications.
With only four teams in the division below able to get promoted surely it would have made more sense to make one big league of fourteen teams and build regional leagues below it. Fourteen teams playing twice would be twenty six games, with the top eight going into play offs for the title and the bottom six doing the same to determine which two clubs finished bottom and would play off with the regional leagues winners underneath.
Predictions… ..
You can expect three mini leagues within the league to occur. The top four will be Crown, Vishaka, Svay Rieng & Naga. Underneath that Tiffy Army and Beoung Ket will be joined by new boys ISI. All three will threaten the top four but lack the depth and quality to break into it. Below them will be Prey Veng, Kirivong & Tiger all of whom will have one or two magical days (hoping to see tiger chairman running round Hanuman with a microphone again) but essentially these 3 will be struggling to break into the top seven. Kirivong could but a lot will depend on the rest of if their summer spending.
