The news comes as part of a number recently announced by Next Step FC as they seek to propel the club to new heights both and off the pitch and follows on from sponsorship deals made with the sports apparel company Desportol, as well as with us at BPVE, for whom Gareth works as head of sports.

Who is Gareth Johnson?

A native of the United Kingdom he is a well known entrepreneur who has founded a number of companies, such as the adventure travel agency Young Pioneer Tours, as well as the crowd funded project Lets Buy An Island.

He began his journalistic career in the late 2000’s working for China Grooves and has since been published by The Guardian, Philippines Lifestyle News, Genius Sports Report and NK News among others.

In Cambodia he has previously worked for Khmer Times and Khmer Nights before moving to Cambodia Investment Review, Cambodia Sports Review and most recently BPVE, where he serves as head of sport.

Why the move to Next Step FC?

According to Johnson the move came naturally with him stating “I first spoke to Next Step head coach Charlie Pomroy while covering the then upcoming CPL 2 and I was immediately sold on the values of the club. And of course Charlie is quite the character”.

And as for the clubs point of view Coach Pomroy had this to say “Gareth ended up covering us and then just organically helping us, with his stories leading to direct investment in the club. Essentially this announcement just normalizes what was in actuality already happening. This gives us the chance to officially recognize the work that he does. It all works perfectly with our deal with BPVE as official media partners, with Gareth obviously writing for them”.

The announcement follows on from that of three members of the sports fashion apparel company Desportol being announced as members of the Next Step FC board of directors.
