KRUD Cambodian Super Cup Final

KRUD

Phnom Penh Crown VS Vishaka

Sunday 30th July, KO: 18.00

Wednesday 2nd March, 2022, what were you doing? Where were you doing it?

For most it’s a day you’d be forgiven for forgetting, but for the CPL and football fans across the country it was the dawn of a new era for football in Cambodia. The Super Cup Final was the season opener for CPL 2022 and this Sunday the curtain raiser for the 2023 season will take place.

Here’s everything you need to know about The Super Cup Final 2023.

CPL under pressure to deliver…

The Super Cup Final 2022 was the first showpiece event hosted by CPL and kicked off the CPL & CL2 League seasons. In the 16 months & 28 days between the two super Cup finals we have seen two League Cup competitions, both won by Crown, one premier league season, also won by Crown and Vishaka bringing home the Hun Sen Cup for the 3rd year in a row.  However, more alarmingly, we’ve also seen six clubs out of business, no women’s or youth leagues and an exit from the SEA Games leaving an overwhelming feeling that football isn’t progressing like we hoped.

For those very reasons CPL are under pressure to deliver.

The Build Up…

The Build up to Sundays final has already begun. Tickets will go on sale tomorrow with the hopes the fans can pack out then national stadium and really kick off the new league season with a bang. There will also be a two day marketing event for fans with CPL clubs all showcasing their merchandise for the upcoming season to be held at Olympia Mall.

A closer look at the teams…

It’s the clash of the titans and this is a game we should get used to seeing because I have a feeling it’s going to be repeated a lot.

Crown go from strength to strength and really look unstoppable at the moment. Neito, Pisoth and Shintaro are all playing unbelievable football without being at their best. Defensively sound and in Oleg they have a coach who is calm and wins the big occasions.

Vishaka are growing rapidly, financially backed and dominating the Hun Sen Cup. They’ve come off the back of a great pre-season after an underwhelming CLC campaign. They look dangerous.

Players To Watch…

Phnom Penh Crown; Neito was on the bench for the League Cup final and came on to miss his penalty. On his day he is unplayable and, for me, the best player in this league. However it’s been a while since we’ve seen that player. Chanpolin is one of my favorite players, makes everything look simple, Pisoth is growing every game and will have a big day this Sunday.

Vishaka;  Vinicius has come with big fanfare and will be under pressure to deliver. In Mouzinho they have a striker who is also keen to deliver and has a point to prove after his move from Tiger. Nora unlikely to feature but the wing back is the pocket ace from the bench.

Prediction…

You’d be a brave person to bet against Crown but if anyone can beat them it’s Vishaka.

Come Monday morning I believe we will be toasting a Vishaka win.
