ASEAN’s newest member Timor-Leste has finally resumed its domestic league competition, the Liga Timorese after an almost three year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The competition which has been run nuder a number of different guises over the years was finally restarted last month giving domestic players the chance to play regular football. Prior to the reopening the best players within the country had been training with the national team, which resulted in a few international shocks, such as their 3rd place finish at the ASEAN Under 22 Championship held in Cambodia.

What is the Liga Timorese format

The top-tier consists of 9 clubs, with them each playing each other home and away, before the final championship round, not dissimilar to the Cambodian format.
The competition is now entering its 5th round, with a break planned for the SEA Games in May, where Timor-Leste are expected to continue their recent fine form.
Liga Timorese 2023 – Who is winning?
SLB Laulara or Associação Desportiva e Sport Laulara e Benfica, one of the most popular and successful clubs in the country currently sit at the summit of the table, unbeaten and with two wins from three.
They are closely followed by Assalam Futebol Clube who sit level on points, but having played one game more.
And the Cambodia connection?
To keep up his fitness Timor-Leste captain and new Visakha signing Mouzinho has been playing on loan at table toppers SLB Laulara, starting all three of their matches and scoring once.
Speaking exclusively to BPVE Mouzinho said “I am pleased to be playing regularly back in Timor-Leste, but am also looking forward to returning and helping my new club Visakha to success”.
