Siem Reap people are about to have a new stadium according to reports in local media. His Excellency Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism, made a request to the Prime Minister to examine the possibility of building a stadium in Siem Reap.
Football In Siem Reap…

Football has grown rapidly over the past few years with four professional clubs; Next Step FC, Siem Reap FC, Angkor Tiger and Soltilo. That was reduced to 3 when Soltilo dissolved this summer.
Clubs have long bemoaned about the lack of fields available and with club licensing regulations requiring all clubs to have a senior teams, u18 and u15 team for both men and women we’re heading for a crippling headache for the fixture computer.
Last season we had four teams playing and when you factor is official training it’s impossible. Now add to the mix the additional youth teams and womens teams that will mean the best case scenario is 6 teams need fields and the very worst case would be 18 teams.
New Stadium Projects Underway…
As reported by BPVE both Next Step FC and Angkor Tiger have stadium projects underway and Siem Reap FC have plans drawn up but it’s unknown how far along they are.
Hanuman stadium is currently hosting both Tiger & Next Step for their games whilst stadium projects come to fruition.
Svay Thom Upgrade Would Make More Sense..
Unbeknown to most the government already own a stadium, Svay Thom in Siem Reap. At the Closing Ceremony of the Conference on Tourism Review and Planning for the Rehabilitation and Promotion of Cambodia’s Tourism Sector in and After the Kovid-19 Crisis, HE Thong Khon Recommended the Meeting of the Ministry of Tourism to Respect to Samdech Techo Prime Minister One at a nearby location or any suitable location to increase tourism products, organize tourism events, contribute to attracting tourists to Siem Reap.
With the new airport location surely an update to the Svay Thom would be more cost effective and give the old style arena a boost?
What we can be sure of is that football in Cambodia is now being used as a weapon and the benefits of the world most popular sport now being utilized by the government. Long term hopefully that will mean more money pumped into the industry to stop the current rot seen this summer with six clubs out of business.
