With the Cambodian Premier League ensuring that the overall marketing and dare I say glitz was taken care of, the only other thing we needed for a great opening day was good football, and the clubs did not disappoint.

Prey Veng 4 Nagaworld 5
I had previously predicted that Prey Veng would not only struggle this season, but lose this match. Judging by the result though, I would say I was right about just one of these points.
Nagaworld certainly started this match off well, going 3-0 up within 25 minutes with goals from Christian and 2 from Marcelo. Prey Veng would pull one back, before Marcio was to complete his hat trick and make it 4-1 going into half time.
Heading into the second half it could have been a rout as Nim made it 5-1, before Prey Veng stormed back with 3 goals, one of which was deep into stoppage time.
The result might have flattered Prey Veng, but you have to admire their tenacity.
Visakha 2 Kiriving SSC 0
The evening match, which was also shown live on TV was slightly less exciting than the first, but still offered a great insight into how these teams might perform this season.
Visakha of course went into the match as favorites and took the lead in the 35th minute through a penalty from Jonato. They stayed the dormant team after this, before settling the match in the 71st minute with a we’ll taken goal from Cambodian Sophanat.
Kirivong though more than held their own and whilst they are unlikely to be challenging for the title this year are equally as unlikely to finish bottom again. The Takeo based side have made huge strides since last season, as evidenced by their semi-final appliance in the League Cup.
Overall though the fans were at the stadiums, people were watching on TV and the CPL have finally created a buzz around domestic Cambodian football.
