SEA Games: Men, Group B Round Up

SEA Games

Matchday two is always so pivotal in tournament football and so it proved in both men’s groups this week. In Group A, Cambodia have given themselves a tough task to qualify after conceding late to the Philippines and Timor are almost certainly out after a second defeat.

In Group B things are delicately balanced and the big 3 are going to go tooth and nail to the end.

Malaysia 5-1 Laos

This was by far the most comprehensive and efficient display seem at the games so far. Malaysia arrived late, missed the opening game week but opened their tournament with a big bang. With all due respect to Laos they’re up against some big teams and it’s all they can do to make sure they give the best account of themselves. They were not bad, Malaysia were that good.

Fazil scored at both ends in the opening 25 minutes but as soon it became 2-1 there was only one winner. Three second half goals of real quality cemented Malaysia spot as an a potential winner.. The result looks harsh on Laos but as mentioned before they were not bad on the night, but the score is a fair reflection of where the nations are in football development.

Singapore 1-3 Vietnam

Singapore will bemoan their luck of the draw forever with opening games against Thailand and Vietnam. They’re hard to beat and competitive but lacking any killer instinct.

Vietnam however are not blowing anyone away with silky football, however they’re efficient, organized and oh so good at converting chances.

Goals either side of half time put them in control and a late goal put real shine on the scoreline. A freak own goal deep into stoppage time gave Singapore some much deserved pride in the scoreline.

What’s Next?

The heavyweight clash on Saturday between Thailand and Malaysia will be an epic encounter and go a long way to deciding the outcome of this group. Laos Vs Singapore will be less dramatic but the battle 4th spot will be an interesting one.
