Friday 12th May will be marked down in history for women’s football in Cambodia. Let me rephrase that; The 12th of May will be marked down in history for football in Cambodia. In England every two years our country descends into chaos as we watch our men’s team fail over and over again on the big stage. Fifty seven years since we last won anything. Then last year our women’s national team became the European champions ending the long wait for glory in England. On Friday the women of Cambodia could be doing the exact same thing.
Myanmar VS Thailand (KO 7PM)
Myanmar came through a difficult group stealing their place with a win over Malaysia on matchday 3. They are growing into this tournament and will be dangerous on Friday night. They have power, they break quickly and organize well defensively. They beat the Philippines 1-0 and Malaysia 5-1 losing only to Vietnam 1-3.
The Thais have been excellent and on evidence so far they’re going to run away with the gold medal. The best teams are always feared in competitions so when it’s time to play them you have to defend well and hope to snatch something. The great teams know this and still destroy you anyway. This Thai team have been Singapore 4-0, Laos 6-0 and even the host nation 3-0. Thirteen excited, zero against. You’d be braver than me to bet against them.
PREDICTION: 0-2
The Thai girls will be too much for Myanmar. Myanmar can be proud of their performance.
Cambodia VS Vietnam (KO 7PM)
The Khmer girls would’ve known this was happening when they looked at the draw and mapped it out they would’ve known that the most likely scenario would be an epic battle between the oldest of rivals was on the cards. The girls have stolen the heart of the nation and whilst the men toil once again in failure the women take center stage and have a genuine chance of bringing home a medal. Beating Laos 2-0 and Singapore 1-0 was enough to bring them to this point.
Tournament favorites Vietnam up until they lost to the Philippines on the last game although a weakened team was fielded. The other two games winning 3-1 against Myanmar and 3-0 vs Malaysia were comfortable wins without ever needing to break stride. You get the feeling they’re saving everything for this semi final and the final vs Thailand, if they can get there of course.
PREDICTION: 2-2 (KH ON PENS)
In tournament football momentum is everything and both these teams lost their last game. The difference will be the fans and this means Cambodia are going into the final.

Indonesia dropping out before the games will be a headline, The Filipino girls will be disappointed they couldn’t find their form earlier in the competition. Singapore, Malaysia and Laos will all be relaxed and proud of representing their country and hope to continue steady growth of women’s football back home.
