First-half  – Thailand 2 Singapore 1

Thailand began the match strongly and it took just 7 minutes for Thai protege Teerasak Poeiphimai to open up the scoring after some poor defending by the Young Lions of Singapore.

This was followed in the 38th minute when Achitpol Keereerom, who plies his trade professionally in Germany slotted home from close range after some superb one touch football from the Thai’s.

Singapore though continued the fight and scored just 3 minutes later through a goal from Nicky which followed a goal mouth scramble and some poor Thai defending.

Second-Half – Thailand 3 Singapore 1

Following the break Purachet Thodsanit scored his first international goal for Thailand, with a close range slice following an excellent ball in from the left-wing.

Following the goal Thailand, seemingly happy with the score dialed it down a gear, which led to neither team particularly looking like they would score.

Overall Thailand can be happy with the 3-1 victory, whilst for Singapore it was a case of same same, but different.

Stats do not lie and this was the fourth straight time the Young Lions had failed to win an opening day match and even the most optimistic of fans probably needs to realize this will not be getting a medal year.

What does it mean?

It means exactly what we expected, with Thailand and Vietnam both winning their opening day matches. With Singapore losing this sole leaves Malaysia as the one team who might be able to throw a spanner in the works..

Thailand will next play on May 6th against Malaysia in a game that may well decide who wins the group.
