As expected Vietnam won their opening match against Laos, but it was largely an unconvincing win, and one that they should probably have scored more goals in.

First-half – Vietnam 1 Laos 0
For a very short period it looked like this might be a really exciting game, with Vietnam opening the scoring on the 2nd minute. The goal came after a phenomenal header from outside the box by Nguyễn Văn Tùng that against all odds somehow managed to tip just over the keeper and into the net.
This was to be the highlight of the match.
Second-half – Vietnam 2 Laos 0
Laos to the credit held string in the second-half, at least until Vietnam scored in the dying seconds of injury time. `The second goal was far less impressive than the first, involving Nguyễn Quốc Việt poaching a goal in at the post, but while not pretty it at least spared some blushes for Vietnam.
Sadly this was one of those games where the two highlights were indeed the two goals, with many fans having left the stadium before the end of the match.
What does it mean?
With almost 4,000 people in attendance Vietnam once again proved that they have strong support, both traveling and locally based, but it was on the pitch where they were slightly less impressive.
Yes Vietnam won, but it was a poor performance and they will have to improve if they want to be considered real contenders for gold.
For Laos this was far from a bad result, but again don’t expect them to be qualifying either!
Vietnam will play Singapore on May 3rd, with Laos taking on Malaysia on the same day.
