Star Timorese Forward Jhon Signs for ISI of CPL

Jhon

Star Timor-Leste forward Jhon Frith has reportedly joined new Cambodian Premier League side ISI Dangkor Senchey Football Club, becoming the second star from the country to enter the league.

Who is Jhon Frith

Alongside fellow countrymen such as Elias, Frith was a star of both the AFF Championship of 2022, as well as the recent 2023 SEA Games, both of which were held in Cambodia.

He has since represented the full national team 11 times scoring 2 goals. Frith who can played as a midfielder, or striker joins ISI from Timorese powerhouse SLB Laulara.

And according to the rumor mill there were at least two other clubs within the Kingdom who were interested in acquiring his signature, with the well financed ISI winning the bidding war.

BPVE were also early admirers of the player, whom we interviewed before the recent SEA Games.

You can read that interview here.

Timorese invasion?

The move of Frith follows that of Mouzinho who joined Angkor Tiger in 2022, before making a high profile move to big spending Visakha FC. Tiger have since recruited the Timor-Leste goalkeeper coach, with a number of other players from the latest member of ASEAN also rumored to be considering a move to the Kingdom.

Ties between the two nations have become increasingly close over the last two years, with President Horta of Timor-Leste visiting the Kingdom on two occasions and bilateral ties are generally considered to be very good.

And of course the Timor football team also recently did Cambodia a “solid” by beating the Philippines during the SEA Games, meaning the hosts merely needed a draw against Myanmar to reach the knock-out rounds, something they sadly failed to do.

Many within the game, including us at BPVE are also excited about the signing from a developmental point of view. Surely it is better to be signing the best young players of the region, rather than acting as the last chance saloon for aging pros, right?
