Women’s Gold Medal Match: Vietnam 2 Myanmar 0

Vietnam Vs Myanmar

After seeing off the rest of the competition Vietnam entered the game as firm favorites to retain the gold medal and they did not disappoint. Myanmar though were far form pushovers and can be rightly proud of their silver medal.

First Half: Vietnam 1-0 Myanmar

It was a game billed to only go one way and Myanmar would need a miracle to overcome this Vietnam team. Before the game the Vietnam game fans were confident and singing like crazy, they knew their team were favorites and were in the mood to enjoy every moment.

The game started in the opposite direction though. Myanmar started brightly and dominated the ball without creating anything clear cut. Vietnam were hounded, every time they won the ball back it was lost again. When you play against the top teams these moments you dominate should produce something, because if you don’t then you will be punished. On twelve minutes that’s exactly what happened when Hyunh Nhu finished off a sweeping move that started well within their own half. The goal was the wake up call Vietnam needed and they began to click through the gears pretty quickly.

It was now Vietnam who would win ball back quickly if they were sloppy in possession. The longer the half went on the more comfortable

they became and several good chances going begging just before half time.

Second Half: Vietnam 2-0 Myanmar

Into the second half and to the credit of Myanmar they came out strong. Driving forward with purpose only to be let down with their final ball or cross.

The game was on a knife edge, Myanmar were coming on strong but Vietnam always looking comfortable. It was going to be a nail biting finish, or so we thought. The game was dead and buried when Nguyen Thi. T rifled home from the else

edge of the penalty area after Myanmar failed to clear a corner three times. The ball bouncing around the defensive third and finally the ball ended up in their net. The Myanmar coach was defiant applauding his players, driving them to keep going but it was done

SEA Games A Final Note

In the end the best team won. Vietnam are a force to be reckoned with and only really Thailand can compete in the region. The World Cup is coming up later this year and Vietnam truly have a chance to leave their mark against the best in the world. Thailand will settle for now for bronze and Myanmar will be truly proud of their unexpected silver medal.

The mystery of Indonesian withdrawal will be a talking point I’m sure and why were the Philippines so bad?

For the host nation it’s a steady building block and one that they must capitalize on. There has never been a better time to play football for women as it grows more popular all over the world. However it’s imperative that we as fans are not condescending or too quick to hand out ribbons for competing. These women are professional athletes and should be held to the same standards and accountability as well as be rewarded and given the same opportunities as any other athlete in the region.
