WOMEN WORLD CUP

Day Number: 1

A review of the days action…

New Zealand opened the tournament with a outrageous result and one that will send shockwaves through the tournament. Norway are fancied by many to go all the way, that’s changed now for sure. They never got out of second gear and paid the ultimate price. 1990 Cameroon beating Argentina, Senegal vs France 2002, this was as big as an upset as any of those.

Into the second game and the co-hosts, Australia,  were up against the Irish, making their world cup debut. In front of 75,000 fans, all of whom were kicking every ball and cheering every tackle, the game was played at a frantic pace. it was a penalty after half time that settled Aussie nerves. However in the 85th minute the Irish had the ball on the back of the net only for VAR to rule it out. Correct decision from where I sat..

What did we learn?

New Zealand have a very similar feel to Korea all those years ago where they co hosted the world cup with Japan and ended up in the semi finals.. Never underestimate the power of home advantage.

What’s coming tomorrow?

Nigeria will play Canada to open the day, followed by Asian hopefuls The Philippines playing their first ever have against the Swiss. Spain vs Costa Rica to end things on Friday night.

Killing It or Having A Shocker?

1.4 Million tickets sold on the eve of today’s games is record record breaking and is a great sign that we’re on for great world cup.
