Women’s World Cup Update – End of Group Stage

World Cup

Welcome to the WWC 2023 Update brought to you exclusively here on BPVE.

Everyday we will bring you a review of the days games, key stats and a couple of fun categories

Group Stage Round Up

Group A – Switzerland top the group without displaying any real intent to win the tournament or being capable of doing so. Norway 6-0 hammering of the Philippines means they knocked out the co-hosts New Zealand on goal difference.

Group B featured co-hosts Australia who demolished Canada and watched Nigeria being held to a draw in their last game meaning the Aussies took top spot. They will be happy because second place would be taking on top spot on Group D and we all know what that means.

Group C – As expected the Japanese cruised into the knockout stages in top spot and the Spanish behind them. Costa Rica and Zambia both incapable of putting up any kind of fight making this the most predictable group of the world cup.

Group D – You would be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t think Lauren James has been the player of the tournament so far. Three goals against China, a wonder strike against the Danes means England topped the group and will face Nigeria. Denmark finished second and will take on Australia.

Group E – After opening with such conviction you’d have been a brave man to bet against USA topping this group. However it is the Dutch that go through top and the USA will now navigate their way through a tougher route to the finals.

Remaining Group Outcomes

In Group F Brazil have it all to do in their final game against Jamaica. Anything but a win will do. France know all they have to do is better the result of Brazil and Jamaica to top the group, they face Panama who have been woeful so far.

Group G will see Sweden top the group, even if they lose to Argentina and Italy destroy South Africa by a lot of goals, the head to head record is better. South Africa vs Italy is a winner takes all battle, a draw is enough for the Italians.

Group H sees Colombia, this writer’s favorite team, go head to head with Morocco and Germany take on South Korea. So many possible outcomes. Columbia win or draw and they will top the group, if they lose and South Korea beat Germany then they would finish second, if they lost and Germany were to win then Colombia, Morocco & Germany would all be on 6 points and goal difference would come into play. Morocco currently on -5 so they would need a 5 goal swing to knock out Colombia.
