It’s the knockout rounds and as the saying goes; it’s now down to business.
Here’s a preview of the the last 16 and our football expert Charlie Pomroy predictions.
Switzerland vs Spain (0-2)
The Swiss were lucky to qualify and somehow they finished 1st. The Spanish are improving every game and they will have too much for the Swiss.
Japan vs Norway (3-1)
Japan came through their group with relative ease and they’re on course to be in the top 4 come the end of the tournament. Norway, as we know, is capable of beating anyone on a good day, the issue is they have too many ordinary and/or bad days.
Netherlands vs South Africa (3-0)
The very fact South Africa got the group is a success already. Whatever happens on Sunday they have been one of the best stories of this world cup. Unfortunately for them, they’re coming up against a dutch team clicking into gear.
Sweden vs USA (3-2)
On paper this could be the final.. The US have some well documented issues and have been well before their best. They will rise to the occasion but the Swedes will snatch it with a minute to go.
England vs Nigeria (1-0)
After the China win everyone will be expecting the English to blow Nigeria away. However for me this is the type of banana skin to trip the English up. I still believe they will win the tournament but it’ll be an underwhelming performance on Monday.
France vs Morocco (4-1)
The French were involved in a thriller against Panama last time out, the free scoring Frenc
h should be playing the Germans but somehow Morocco are here instead.
Australia vs Denmark (2-0)
The stars aligned and the co-hosts qualified top of the group and they’re rewarded with a game against an average Danish side. The Aussies English quarter final battle is on.
Colombia vs Jamaica (3-1)
The Colombians ended up topping the group despite their last game nightmare against Korea. Jamaica have been another fairytale story but this will be a step too far for them.
