Welcome to the WWC 2023 Update brought to you exclusively here on BPVE.
Everyday we will bring you a review of the days games, key stats and a couple of fun categories
We’re down to the last eight and the best unpredictable world cup in history is all set for four ties that could go either way.
Japan 1-2 Sweden
Sweden survived a late scare to book their place in the semi finals and now the bookies second favorite to win it. The first half was all Sweden taking the lead on 30 minutes and then hitting the post 2 minutes later.. Japan could barely get out their own half. Into the second period and the lead was doubled just after the hour mark. Japan had a chance on 70 minutes but a penalty miss by Riko Uewi was to prove costly. They did score with 5 minutes to go and even hit the post after that but the swedish held on.
Spain vs Netherlands
Spain have proven the doubters wrong and will be confident they can overcome Sweden in the semi final. Redondo is in magnificent form and a contender for player of the tournament.

The Dutch will feel VAR had too much to say on the outcome with a goal disallowed and a penalty that wasn’t a penalty in their opinion. However in my opinion both decisions were correct and the Spanish were the better team across 90 minutes and extra time
England 2-1 Colombia

England came from a goal down and once again showed that they’re the real deal. The squad is deeper than first thought and even when a goal down there is no panic. They stick to what they know and stay confident in their ability to win games no matter what they need to do or how they need to do it.
France 0- 0 Australia (6-7)
The shock of the round and the co hosts now will feel they have as good as chance as anyone on home soil. The Aussies played out a 0-0 draw with tournament entertainers France and somehow restricted the French to nothing but long shots.
Onto the penalty shootout and then the drama began. France missed their first, Australia their second, France missed again on three giving the Aussies the chance to seal it but they missed their fourth penalty and both converted the fifth and sixth penalties making 4-4. Both scored again to make 5-5 then 6-6. France missed!! The Aussies had a chance to win it. They missed. France could punish them. They missed again! Cortne Vine stepped up and smashed home to make it 7-6.
The Semi Finals
On Tuesday Spain will face Sweden in the battle of European heavyweights. The Swedes, for me, have been the best team of the tournament and would be worthy champions.
Then on Wednesday we reignite an old rivalry between England and Australia which could go either way. The English will be heavy favorites but the Aussies, in their own backyard and en-route to the winning the world cup this game stinks of something we will be hearing about for decades to come. Every Pomme near and far will forever be reminded of this defeat should it happen.
