Group G on a knife edge…

Day Number: 9

A review of the days action…

The day opened with South Africa squandering a two goal advantage against the Argentinians. It was a thrilling encounter played between two teams who were really only playing for third place in this group and a draw would have cemented that fact.

Africa will be hoping Sweden can overcome Italy which would leave them in prime position to take the Italians place in the next round. Argentina, despite their comeback here, will need a miracle now to qualify.

In Group E it was the English who booked their place into the second round without breaking into second gear, although they were made to sweat by the Danes.

Lauren James gave England the lead after just six minutes. Taking control of the ball 30 yards out, two drops of the shoulder created herself some space and a thunderbolt strike into the top corner gave the Lionesses a perfect start. The Danes hit the post late on but overall it was another England performance that failed to inspire but was enough for 3 points.

The Chinese knew that this was the game they had to win to have any chance of upsetting the odds and getting out of this group. Haiti were impressive against the English and the better team here as well. VAR ruled out an opening goal for Haiti. Then we were reminded of how cruel football can be sometimes. China down to ten snatched it with ten minutes left giving them the 1-0. Haiti are out but underservedly so.

What did we learn?

England are getting the job done. This world cup is unpredictable.

What’s coming tomorrow?

Sweden take on Italy, the French host Brazil and Panama vs Jamaica.
