Day Number: 11
Who Needs what today…
Group A is finely balanced going into the final round and all four teams have the chance to qualify. The Norwegians need to beat The Philippines to have any chance of qualifying whilst the Filipinas know a draw is enough for them. The Swiss & Kiwis both go through with a win, a draw could take them both through but they would need the Philippines to draw or lose by only one goal.
What happened…
Group H came to close with Morocco shocking the world and beating the Koreans on the days first game before Colombia gave us an even bigger shock beating the early tournament favorites Germany. The winner of this group will most likely meet the English in the quarter finals and on this performance the Colombians will feel indestructible.
Group A finished as predicted before the tournament but not expected after the first two games. Norway have been poor but clicked into gear to smash the Philippines 6-0, meaning their head to head record against them was enough to take them through. The Swiss held out for a draw with New Zealand and that was enough for them to top the group and send the kiwis out of the tournament on goal difference. I’m a big believer in the host nation staying in the competition as long as possible for excitement value, the world cup will be less entertaining without the New Zealand.
What did we learn?
Colombia are the hottest team around right now!
What’s coming tomorrow?
Group B & C will come to a close. Japan vs Spain for the top spot and Australia know they have to win to qualify or both co hosts will be out.
